Brandstof
6 Oct 2013 Starts at: 3 p.m. Location: Garage Rotterdam

Brandstof is a regular event at Garage Rotterdam providing background information about the exhibitions. A round table session about the exhibition On the Edge will be held on Sunday afternoon 6 October at 15.00 hrs. The main question is: To what extent should art education be either autonomous or market-driven considering our current economic and political climate?

Art education in the Netherlands has recently been under attack. The autonomy of art education is increasingly under pressure due to current Dutch cultural policy. Fewer visual artists are being trained. What’s more, educational institutions are forced to: offer unique curricula to distinguish themselves, make student selection procedures stricter and focus on creating and marketing top talent.

The ideal of the creative entrepreneur is spreading rapidly and has now been included in the curriculum of design academies. Educational institutions have implemented project-based education and pay more attention to entrepreneurship in their curricula in an attempt to produce market-proof designers and visual artists. What will the implications be for experimenting and researching in art education? Will these graduates have something meaningful to say?

This topic will be debated live by Bas van Beek (designer, former head of designLAB, Gerrit Rietveld Academy Amsterdam), Jeroen van den Eijnde (researcher and lecturer at ArtEz Arnhem), Cynthia Hathaway (designer, lecturer at Gerrit Rietveld Academy Amsterdam, Academie van Bouwkunst Amsterdam, Design Academy Eindhoven and others) and Annemartine van Kesteren (Design curator, Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, lecturer at Design Academy Eindhoven).
