Identity Flux refers to a state of constant change in our being. Our identity and the way in which we present ourselves to the world is always in flux and subject to change. There is never merely one authentic self, but an interplay of various sides that appear in different situations. Playing a role or taking on an alter ego is a way to explore and develop the various aspects of our identity. It is a way to cherish hidden characteristics, to discover emerging desires and to explore various aspects of our identity within a framework we have chosen ourselves.
Creating an avatar in cyberspace, exploring gender roles, wearing a uniform: these are some of the answers to the human desire to escape from the restrictions and expectations of everyday life. These are ways in which we can give room to all aspects of our existence.
Identity Flux is the second group exhibition by curator Nadine van den Bosch at Garage Rotterdam. It offers insight into a parallel world in which appearances are carefully constructed and turn up in different – at times very subtle – ways. The exhibition explores alternative identities and celebrates duality.
