We know Charlotte Schleiffert (born 1967, Tilburg) primarily for her impressive, colourful drawings of human figures with robust animal heads dressed in outfits resembling historical costumes. Using mixed media techniques comprising paint, chalk and paper, she creates towering shapes shrouded in masks and Victorian dresses. Despite their animalistic appearance, to Schleiffert the figures are real people. The animal heads give them status and character, making them strong and powerful figures. ‘I wanted to create a mix of eras and locations. My figures are not always happy with their lives, and dream of an alternative existence. They embody the desire for a different world.’
