Sema Bekirovic (born 1977, Amsterdam) uses animals in her work predominantly by allowing them to do what they always do. She creates the conditions, and the animals subsequently complete her work . They are actors, as it were, in a theatre performance she herself knows nothing about. This gives her work a playful, casual character. She observes animals and makes use of their natural behaviour.

‘The dividing line we draw between us and them is one that we keep in our minds because we are perhaps not able to bear the fact that we are, quite simply, nature’, she said. Her work seems simple, yet at the same time it touches on universal themes such as transience and man’s natural habitat.
