Being interested in the materiality of the silicone by analogy with the skin and the human body, Vanessa Safavi uses it as an element to understand contemporary fashions and human behaviours. For her, the complexion of the skin is a fundamental creator of identity, which is deeply rooted in a cultural history.
Both works The murderer and The witness display a framed silicone sheet, alluding to the body in fleshy circumstances, such as in passion crimes where the victim, the witness and the murder’s body have a story to tell.
