After studying physics in Eindhoven and Delft, Michiel van Overbeek spent several years doing research work for TNO. He currently devotes all his time to his calling as an artist.
Michiel van Overbeek examines the perception of time and movement by means of self-made machines such as clocks. The artist believes that every movement has its own identity: slow, angular, old-fashioned, beautiful, exciting, tragic. Our perception of time is subjective, with clocks as our only anchor.
Van Overbeek manages to unsettle this fundamental certainty by manipulating clocks. It’s as though the clock were alive, with a will of its own and no longer doing what it was originally intended to do. Hitches and distortions in technology inevitably lead to loss of control.
