The journey of a common supermarket banana that was traced all the way from its Ecuadorian origin to Iceland unveils the dizzying travels facilitated by the global food trade industry. An extensive “from” label illustrates how foreign our familiar food items are to the landscapes where we consume them. A banana’s passport, stamped in international travel visas, proves how our ingredients often travel across borders and lands much more than many of us do, or can.
