Food is a political negotiation tool, and our digestive systems are the site of this struggle. Famines exist as a top-down power dynamic, often engineered by governments to subordinate their people. Hunger strikes, on the other hand, are an example of a bottom-up power dynamic, of individual resistance, often undertaken by political prisoners as a last resort for claiming their rights. While these urgencies are rarely felt in the West, 23 fruit leather aprons hang as a visual gesture towards how vulnerabile our digestive systems are when food security is manipulated for power.
