All too often, the sweetness of sugar glazes over its bitter past. A towering mural unveils how historical Indonesian sugar plantations were sites of violence and oppression under Dutch colonial rule. The sweet resources that were extracted from these sugar cane plantations are cast into sugar sculptures, crystallizing the tale of funding the Golden Era of the Dutch Kingdom with Indonesian lands, labor and goods.
