Bear No Name Julius Thissen
(2022)

Julius Thissen, Bear No Name, 2022

Thissen developed the artwork Bear No Name (2022) especially for the exhibition For What It's Worth. The work is a subtle follow-up to an older work by Thissen: A Conventional Commodity (2018), which can also be seen in the exhibition.

In this new work, Thissen reflects in particular on the tension between alleged autonomy and anonymity. The traditional male costume is often considered a symbol of masculine power.

Thissen wonders, how was that power and status acquired and at the expense of whom? The photo shows Thissen in an alienating pose; almost seeming to disappear in the costume.
