Photography, balancing sculptures None

The Pillars of home project includes 96 photographs of balancing sculptures created in the living room, kitchen, bedroom, and even the staircase. After giving birth to her first child Marcel, these home areas turned into Klenyánszki’s artist studio for temporary periods of no more than 30 minutes at a time, indicating her newborn’s short naps.

The pillars in the photographs rely on their inner stability while being framed only by the floor and the ceiling. The piled-up objects are coherent entities, but their delicate arrangement and balancing structure make them vulnerable. They can be destroyed at any moment. Not only the existence of the image is in danger if the installation collapses, but the noise of the falling objects can wake the baby at any second, which puts an end to the working session.

In a way, the heaping of such fragile compositions becomes a meditative method through which the artist contemplates the challenges of the new life during maternity. Pillars of home thus gives 96 surreal responses to one common challenge: how does a mother find a balance between all her priorities. It’s a never-ending juggling act.
