Domas van Wijk lives and works between Mallorca and Rotterdam. In his practice, he develops artworks which consist of existing objects and situations. Detached from their previous function and meaning, he uses them again. Van Wijk is looking for unexpected and new appearances, characteristics of behavior that arise from the interaction between consciously chosen materials. These materials are the residue of developed research into personal interests that move between both 'high' and popular culture.

As an artist, Van Wijk assumes the role of mediator during this process. He combines existing materials to create a dialogue, making use of the material as much as possible. Although his authorship is present in the choices made and the bringing together of the different elements, this convergence of materials also seems to have a life of its own. This effect is used by Van Wijk to bring the dead material to life. The unexpected 'animistic' objects assigned by Van Wijk have properties that cannot be directly traced from the composition: the whole is much more than the sum of its parts.
