Markus Meurer is autodidact. Partly because of his eccentricity, he is a well-known figure in outsider art. His work has been shown at various international exhibitions.
Markus Meurer grew up in the 1960s at the base of the Monreal castle. The eccentric home of the large Meurer family was surrounded by self-constructed guards and hybrid vehicles. The walls and ceilings (both inside and outside) were full of paintings and wood carvings, while recycled material, sculptures and small models of motorcycles and insects were everywhere. Meurer continued to live at home until 2006.
Meurer’s detailed assemblies, paintings and collages consisted of numerous parts ranging from vacuum cleaners to metal wires and lamp shades: whatever is available. The original purposes of the objects are lost; but together they serve a new purpose. Meurer always covers his machines in grease, giving them a rundown look because of the dust and dirt sticking to them.
