Sebastiaan Schlicher makes drawings, videos and installations. His works are populated by grotesque characters who try to restore order in situations that have gotten out of hand. They follow their own logic in attempts to create a new world, thereby unbalancing the boundary between delusion and reality. Schlicher uses association to arrive at his drawings. As a result of adding several layers on top of one another, the scenes always balance on the edge of chaos. An important role is played by text. Self-conceived sentences, citations and paraphrases end up on the paper in criss-cross fashion. Sometimes they are crossed out or written in mirror image, or there is a complete lack of coherence with what is being portrayed. The texts seem to hold the key to understanding, but onlookers are left just as confused as the characters who are desperately trying to get a grip on their environment.
