Teo Treloar graduated with honours in painting at Sydney College of the Arts. He is lecturer in visual arts at the University of Wollongong in Australia. Up till now his work was mainly exhibited in Australia.
Teo Treloar's paintings and drawings are subdued, yet intense. The drawings are often created on micro-format. Treloar considers their minimal scale as a counterbalance to the overwhelming visual culture. Onlookers have to get very close to be able to see them properly, unlike the directness of advertising posers and television screens that we are confronted with on a daily basis. The concentrated nature of the work is also a reference to the world of science, from which Treloar borrows various images. For instance, the faceless characters, often wearing white lab-coats, are surrounded by mathematical instruments or are partially 'morphed' into geometric shapes reminiscent of clouds of gas or black holes. Fascinated by existential thinkers such as Kafka, Dostoyevsky and Camus, Treloar’s figures search in vain for significance and meaning.
