Fiona Tan is internationally renowned for her installations, films and photo-works. Her works are often a combination of archival images and self-made images, whereby the dividing line between fact and fiction is sometimes blurred. Tan regards time as her material, from which she constructs motionless works and works involving minimal movement. Memory and recall are important subjects in her oeuvre, and her works often result from a journey. The work 'Lift' is not a manipulated photo, but a registration of a performance in which Tan brought one of her own dreams to life. On a January morning, she collected fifty helium-filled balloons, fixed their strings to a harness, and allowed the winter wind to lift her into the air. Like a true escape artist, she floated meters high above the Sarphati park in Amsterdam, which feat was captured by assistants and press photographers.
