The sculptures, paintings, photos and prints of Jakup Auce can be seen as characters. Whereas traditionally a portrait aims to grasp the essence of its subject as a unique and autonomous being, Auce portrays a reality in which identities – even his own – are more fluid. The sculpture in this exhibition is part of the series Art at the End of Social. The series consists of anthropomorphic figures made of metal, with one or more vases of coloured water attached to it. The various sub-titles refer to mental states: Anxiety, Dread, Worry, Panic and, on this occasion, Unease. Reminiscent of a form of Rorschach test, they seem to expose the mental state of their onlookers: what mental image does it conjure up for you?
