Arjan de Nooy buys, invents, collects, finds, makes, borrows, writes, describes, studies and archives photographs. De Nooy provides captions for long forgotten everyday situations from days gone by. No other medium is as context-sensitive as photography; a caption can change a photograph completely, particularly when a composition involves people. The situations become much less mundane because of the connections De Nooy makes. The realisation dawns that we can never rely on our visual sense alone, and that an innocent looking photograph can be extremely destructive.
