The thought behind a funeral wreath is that flowers can be immensely comforting. What else can you do when faced with something drastic like the loss of a loved one? The flowers are there to help you. In fact, Claudia Sola takes a funeral wreath apart, and paints each flower separately on a large white sheet. 'The organisation of wreaths is what appeals to me. What type of flowers are they? This type of wreath always contains lilies. While researching names and species, I came across all sorts of meanings and legends: the flowers you choose give voice to feelings you are unable to express. Some flowers are known for their medicinal qualities, others are wallflowers. I write these stories, by hand, around the flowers I draw. The magic of flowers and plants is a universal language.’
