Paul Bogaers has always been searching for the invisible: making visible that which is hidden behind the visible reality. ‘I call it ‘spirit’. It could be anything: a person's character, the tension between two people, ageing, an idea – everything that cannot be perceived using our senses’. He is not interested in making something visible: What Bogaers wants is to summon up that which cannot be seen.
His basis for realising this is anchored in photography – in which he originally graduated – as this is the ideal medium in which the material blends with the non-material. This is why he adds all sorts of things: sticky strips of paper, branches, leaves. The photo eventually becomes an object and dissolves into installations that conjure up oppressive atmospheres, such as spirit forests with staring faces and imploring masks.
