Specola Vaticana Laurent Grasso
(2014)

8 x 91 x 108 cm Fresson print on silver paper, aluminum, walnut wood frame, glass Courtesy of the artist and Galerie Perrotin, Paris

In his series Specola Vaticana, Grasso reproduces historical photographs of popes and bishops who are observing heaven through telescopes from one of the oldest astronomical institutes in the world, the Vatican Observatory. It is not clear what the spiritual leaders are looking for. Something physical or metaphysical? Are they simply posing for the photograph or are they really making observations on behalf of science?
