The universe is not only above us and outside us. The inner universe is also an undiscovered territory that has a compelling appeal to Boezem. The artist's photographic self-portrait dating from 1984 forms, as it were, a scan of him; it is his attempt to get through to his own mind. All we find is darkness. We could draw a parallel here with so-called dark matter, a hypothetical type of material in the cosmos, which is invisible and cannot be detected by optical means. But there, in that dark place, our imagination, intangible and infinite, can stretch itself to its full size.
