Derk Thijs is intrigued by icons: images which represent the relationship between the mundane and the sacred or heavenly. He noted that icons often have a strong vertical focus: this represents the interaction or gaze shifting between heaven and earth. The same thing occurs in many of Thijs's paintings, meaning that these works could also be regarded as icons.
